Honeymoon

It's hard to say you're tiring of travel, but with all the early flight preparations and 2 nights in each city, we were starting to tire of the efficient, but less than beautiful airports of Europe. Of course the Arlanda Express train ride is always a treat :-) But after a late departure due to the aeroplane wings icing up (yes! I had no idea this actually happened), we ended up in Zurich just after 2:30pm after a 6:30am wakeup. Zurich was decked out for...

After saying our farewells to snow flurries and the polar night in Tromsø we arrived back to a white Stockholm! During the weekend Sweden had been blanketed top to bottom in huge amounts of snow. Swedes often claim to be the orginators of the expression, there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing (Det finns inget dåligt väder, bara dåliga kläder) so we layered up and staked out the free Ikea...

Bad jokes aside, we jumped on the Arctic Explorer bright and early (for Tromsø!) to see the whales. It was a large ship with a bright, enthusiastic host and less than 30 mins after departure we were surrounded by gorgeous coastline, quaint fishing towns and a large pod of feeding orcas! Changes in herring migration patterns (thought to be from over-fishing) meant that Tromsø is now a key whale spotting area. In fact, the sound we were in -...

[flickr_tags user_id="29385474@N00" tags="norwayday2"] Tromsø greeted us with crystal clear skies and a subdued light this morning. Not the darkness I was expecting from the polar night but breathtakingly beautiful. Over the bridge we could see gorgeous pitched rooves covered in fresh snow along the fjord as sailors shoveled snow off their boats. Christmas really sparkles here and the locals put in a lot of effort to light up trees, streets and houses so you feel like you're living in a fairy tale. Fresh snow is so soft to step in, jump...

[flickr_tags user_id="29385474@N00" tags="norwayday1"] It was a little sad to leave our airbnb host's beautiful house. She had an impeccable sense of design complemented by the high ceilings of the old building. Gorgeous wooden stands held plants and a lovely display wall held precious objects from Colombia and Asia. Even the crockery was stunning - and matching!  As lunch time travel has a tendency to take up most of the morning we spent time trying to squeeze more space out of our ever bulging bags, walking them down to the station and enjoying the...
